Hewlett Packard Enterprise has shared predictions about key networking trends for 2024. David Hughes, Senior Vice President and Chief Product and Technology Officer of HPE Aruba Networking, anticipates significant changes in the networking landscape.
Prediction 1: The decline of standalone Firewalls
The traditional approach of relying on standalone firewalls to protect an organization’s internal network from external threats is fading away. With the rise of a hybrid workforce and widespread use of IoT devices, the concept of a secure perimeter is diminishing. Deploying numerous internal firewalls to cover gaps complicates the network, introduces potential errors, and hinders agile business operations.
The next-generation firewall, once seen as innovative, is losing ground. The industry is moving towards the adoption of the secure service edge (SSE), replacing traditional firewalls with cloud-based secure web gateways, cloud access security brokers, and zero-trust network access. SSE offers an effective way to manage security for users accessing applications from any location.
For IoT security, segmentation is crucial, and firewall services are now integrated into access points, switches, and SD-WAN gateways at the network edge.
Additionally, in data centers, cost-effective top-of-rack switches with L4-7 security functionality are being introduced for east-west segmentation. The decline of the next-gen firewall market is expected to continue as these new cloud-based and integrated capabilities simplify secure connectivity management.
